MK + King Mez Inspire Youth in Virgin Islands

King-Mez-and-MK-Asante-in-Virgin-IslandsOne of my favorite rapper/producers, Raleigh, North Carolina’s King Mez and I recently traveled to the Virgin Islands together for the Man-Up conference at the University of the Virgin Islands.

The Man-Up Conference was started in 2011 in response to rising cases of violence in the community and the low enrollment rate of young men in higher education. It is an initiative of “Brothers with a Cause,” a UVI program that seeks to attract more male students to the University and provide tools and support to help them graduate.

This year’s keynote speakers were world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson and myself. King Mez opened up for me, performing a few songs from his latest album My Everlasting Zeal. The theme for this year’s conference–“Man-Up: Discovering Your Gifts and Talents”–resonated deeply with me and I used the platform to share my journey with the 3,000 + students.
